From 2035, you won’t be able to buy a new petrol or diesel car.
From that date, car companies will be banned from selling you a new petrol, diesel, hybrid or plug-in hybrid car.
That doesn’t mean you’ll be banned from driving a petrol or diesel car altogether.
Used cars won’t be affected – so even after 2035, you’ll still be able to buy a second hand petrol, diesel or hybrid car.
But put simply, you won’t be able to walk into a showroom and buy a new one.
The UK – and the world – is transitioning to electric vehicles.
Whether you agree with banning petrol and diesel cars or not, the world is moving towards a future of zero emission vehicles.
This might be hard to imagine now, but just as we got used to life without steam trains and coal-fired heating, we will adjust to driving cars that don’t run on fossil fuels.
Electric cars aren’t necessarily the only answer to replacing petrol and diesel ones. Hydrogen-powered cars is one solution, for example.
But in the UK – where very few hydrogen filling stations exist – it’s more likely that you’ll be buying a battery electric car come 2035.
Will the ban happen in 2030 or 2035?
As of today, the ban is due to happen in 2035.
But that may change – it’s likely it will be brought forward to 2030.
